Target Hardening - Shed Security

Shed Security

Indio Springs RV Resort experiences more shed break ins than any other, and, it is very easy and cost effective to prevent.

First off when considering building or placing a shed, plan if at all possible to have the door facing the roadway in front. Why? Simple, bad guys do not like having their backs to the main point of detection. If the shed is placed sideways they can work on the lock and still have good field of vision to the roadway and the back. Take that away from them!

Second, construction is important. All sheds should have the doorway wall and door lined with plywood to reinforce the construction. Next, hardware is critical. Cheap hasps and recommended hasps are only a couple of dollars apart.
Fenix Hasp
Here is the recommended hasp.

It can be purchased online at Home Depot. Purchase info is Model # 04004

Internet #207006262  Store SKU #1002144647   $10.98.

In future check front office as we may stock this item.

Next is the lock. Long shackled locks are easily cut by bolt cutters, and cheap locks can’t repel hammer blows to the body of the lock. This circular lock is reasonably priced and inexpensive.
Circular Lock

It can be purchased at Harbor Freight for $7.98 and it fits the hasp shown above.

That’s only $19.00 for great security.

Now we have to focus on reinforcement as a pry bar is the second most common tool after bolt cutters.

Carriage Bolt
Don’t use the screws included with the hasp but rather buy 4- ¼”  carriage bolts
of sufficient length to pass through the shed wall or door. Normally about 2” long.

Add to that 4 – “fender washers”.
FENDER WASHER
These are small diameter inner hole washers with very large 1” outside diameters. These will be installed before the nut on the inside to spread any force over a larger area.

In the following picture I have used larger aluminum pieces to accomplish the same thing. Note the plywood backing as well.

This is what it looks like when done and you are as secure as you can be.
